A Les Paul at last

By: on 16 December 2019
Twenty odd years ago in 1996 I played an old Les Paul in a little guitar shop in Sydney. It was priced at $5000+ and way out of my price range. That guitar had a feel to it that I was kind of earthy don’t really know how to describe it, but it has been in the back of my mind ever since. I’ve managed to get some really nice guitars since then including custom24 10 top, USA Strat and Tele and a really great Ibanez. I’ve avoided a Gibson Les Paul initially because the price of an older one was just too high and more recently the quality was regularly reported on the usual channels as inconsistent. Now in 2019 after watching very recent reviews I thought I’d bite the bullet and buy one. I have a number of really good stores that I have used over the last few years within driving distance but decided to go with Port Mac Guitars. That on its own was a big move for me. I’ve always thought I’d never buy a guitar that I couldn’t actually play first, too risky. I was so confident that the Les Paul Original series was that good that it was the right time. The best price on the day was at Port Mac’s. A massive bonus is the fact they have a PLEK machine and on top of that the guitar gets PLEXd and delivered included in the price. The guitar arrived in perfect condition by courier a few days later. That’s a lot of rambling but then I don’t do many reviews and I’m a bit blown away but what is now sitting in my guitar rack. The guitar is really just perfect. It has that same feel I got 20 years ago in that little Sydney shop, and it sounds so good and has so much range and presence. Unplugged it is acoustically loud. Plugged in the range of the tone pots is very good and the pickups so dynamic. I love the weight and the look of the unburst finish (it’s the 60s model). The way the guitar was setup by PMG is exactly right and the just the way I described when they asked my what I wanted in the setup. The fit and finish of this guitar is flawless from the factory and I really couldn’t be happier. I’m really enjoying getting to know it.
